The cost of unhealthy living
Cigarettes, alcohol, junk food and physical inactivity cost Swedish society SEK 55 billion ($8.7 billion) each year in shape of sickness, early death, and fall in production according to FHI (Statens folkhälsoinstitut – the Swedish National Institute of Public Health). Add to that accidents, and the cost goes up to 120 billion SEK ($18.8 billion). A great deal of this money could be saved through preventive and health beneficial work, according to FHI in a report to the government. -
In the U.S., through obesity alone, researchers estimate the cost among full-time workers is in excess of $73 billion per year.
